WAPDA History Gallery


Water and Power Development Authority was created through an Act in1958 to provide Unified and coordinated development of water and power resources of Pakistan

At the time of creation WAPDA had following charter of duties:

  • Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Power
  • Irrigation, Water supply and Drainage
  • Prevention of Water logging and Reclamation of Saline Lands
  • Flood Control
  • Inland Navigation

WAPDA is an autonomous and statutory body under the administrative control of Federal Government. WAPDA Authority consists of one Chairman, three Members (Water, Power & Finance) and a Secretary. WAPDA was authorized to chalk out a comprehensive programme for generation of Hydro Electric (Hydel) and Thermal Power and installation of Transmission and Distribution Lines besides construction of Grid Stations throughout the country except Karachi and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
