WAPDA greets national women hockey team

Lahore – October 20, 2017: National women hockey team, headed by their Captain Rizwana Yasmin, called on WAPDA Chairman and WAPDA Sports Board Patron-in-Chief Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) at WAPDA House today. The team management also accompanied them during the visit. WAPDA Sports Board President and senior officers were also present on the occasion.

The 18-member national women hockey team has recently been selected for Asian Challenge Hockey Cup to be played from October 22 to 29 in Brunei Darussalam. Out of 18 selected women hockets for team, Captain and Vice Captain among 11 players belong to WAPDA. WAPDA women hockey team, raised in 2004, has been national champion for the last consecutive 13 years.

During his interaction with the players, Chairman WAPDA expressed best wishes for the team in the upcoming event at Brunei. He hoped that the team will bring good name for the country with their hard work, team spirit, conduct and behavior in and outside the field. He said that sportspersons, girl players in particular, can help bringing soft image of the country into limelight if they are encouraged and groomed in sports by providing proper facilities. The Chairman further said that WAPDA always takes pride in serving the nation for promotion of sports in youth, both boys and girls. WAPDA has been giving more and more incentives to girls to lessen gender disparity in sports. These incentives have been yielding positive results to encourage our young girls in sports. WAPDA has increased number of scholarships for girls to 50 percent in athletics under WAPDA Endowment Fund for Sports for their motivation in games, he added.

The Chairman announced cash prize of Rs.500,000 for the team. He also gave away cash award to Rizwana Yasmin, a WAPDA player, who was declared Best Goal Keeper of the Asian Women Hockey Cup 2016 in Thailand.
