Examination Cell was created by WAPDA Authority in 1967 to cater the needs of Departmental Promotion as well as Induction Examinations of few categories of Admn & Accounts Staff. This Cell was initially working under administrative control of Secretary WAPDA. In 2000 it was placed under General Manager (Admn) and then in 2002 under GM (Training).

The scope of Departmental Promotion Examination (DPE) as well as categories of staff kept on increasing with the passage of time and Examination Cell headed by Deputy Director (Admn) / Controller of Examinations was converted into a full fledge Directorate in 2000 headed by Director (Examinations). It conducts Induction Exams for BPS-16, 17 & 18 for WAPDA only and DPEs of WAPDA / PEPCO Personnel for Promotion in BPS-17,18 & 19. Keeping in view the importance of Human Resource Development, Authority introduced DPEs for almost 110 categories of Officers / Officials in 2000.

A mechanism of Departmental Promotion Examinations was devised and introduced through Standing Operating Procedure (SOP) for Training & Examination in 2001 which was later on amended in 2005. DPEs of these categories are conducted in five following sessions in every year:-
