Pakistan excels in hydropower generation :: IHA ranks Pakistan 3rd in the world for newly installed hydropower capacity

Image 1May 14, 2019: In what can be termed a matter of pride and privilege for the country, Pakistan was ranked 3rd in the world for newly installed hydropower capacity.

This has been declared by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in its recently issued report titled “2019: Hydropower Status Report – Sector Trends and Insights”. Formed under the auspices of UNESCO in 1995 as a forum to promote and disseminate good practice about hydropower, IHA champions continuous improvement and sustainable practices across the sector.

May 03, 2019: A 6-member delegation of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), headed by its President Dr. Bandar M. H. Hajjar currently on a visit to Pakistan, today called on Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) to discuss potential support for development of a programme to facilitate construction of hydropower projects in Pakistan.

PM PERFORMS GROUNDBREAKING OF MOHMAND DAM

Mohmand - May 2, 2019 (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan here Thursday performed the groundbreaking of multi-faceted Mohmand Dam Hydropower project that will generate 800megawatt electricity besides water storage capacity of over 1.2million acres feet (MAF), which will directly benefit people of Charsadda, Mohmand and adjoining areas of Khyber Pakthunkhwa.

Dams must for water, food, energy security: Chairman WAPDA ‘20 million acre barren land can be irrigated with construction of dams’

April 11, 2019: Underlining the need for construction of dams, Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) has said that as many as 20 million acre barren land can be brought under plough if the water is made available by developing water storages in the country. With construction of water sector projects, we can strengthen our agriculture to attain food security and cope with the fast growing needs of water in domestic and industrial sectors besides injecting sizeable low-cost hydel electricity into the National Grid to stabilize the national economy.

Another landmark achieved - Neelum Jhelum Project crosses 1000 MW generation mark; Project generating 1040 MW beyond installed capacity of 969 MW

April 9, 2019: State-of-the art Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project constructed by WAPDA on River Neelum in Azad Jammu and Kashmir achieved yet another landmark today, as electricity generation from the project crossed 1000 mega watt (MW) mark. Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project generated up to 1040 MW beyond its installed generation capacity of 969 MW, which reflected the efficiency standards of the power plant.
