GHAZI BAROTHA HYDROPOWER PROJECT (First of its Kind Environmental and Social Monitoring Initiative in Pakistan)

WEC remained involved during all project implementation stages as a lone crusader and also kick started a decade long environmental and social (E&S) monitoring spree. It was first of its kind, novel and well carved E&S monitoring program. A project based sub-unit of WEC monitored the changes in the wake of project activities, in ground water behavior, surface water degradation, air quality, noise level, solid waste and wastewater management, spoil banks management, health and safety related issues, social uplift schemes for projects affected persons through local NGO named as Ghazi Barotha Tarakiati Idara (GBTI), parameters pertaining to ecological sustainability of project and scores of others.

This initiative of implementation of project Environmental Management Plan in befitting manner was ultimately curtailed through a logical outcome of lesson learnt. The lesson learned during this monitoring will provide building blocks for any such future environmental monitoring initiatives.
