TARBELA  HYDROPOWER PROJECT 4^TH EXTENSION

Tarbela 4th extension project is under construction on already existing storage site of Tarbela Dam. The 4th tunnel at Tarbela was exclusively meant for irrigation releases. However, a cushion of hydropower development was reserved for future exploitation in its original design. In the backdrop of present energy crisis in the country and availability of a hydropower development window. WAPDA decided to implement Tarbela 4th Extension HPP with the help of world Bank.

WEC is supposed to act as helm’s man in sound environmental and social drives and initiatives during project implementation. And also keeping in view, the ever expanding horizon of Hydropower development in future, it was decided to enhance the working capability of WEC through strengthening and capacity building under financial umbrella of Tarbela 4th Extension HPP. Presently, WEC is under the process of augmentation.

Meanwhile, WEC is playing a key actor role in external environmental and social monitoring and internal auditing of the project. A robust three tier project based hierarchy of stakeholder’s encompassing Environmental and Social Management Unit (ESMU), supervision consultant E&S, M&E consultants E&S representatives and finally contractors, E&S units, are working cohesively under the top supervision and guidance of WEC and World Bank to implement Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).
