Env. Plan for NJHPP

NEELUM JHELUM HYDROPOWER PROJECT (Environmental Initiative having Inherent Twists and Turns)

The construction work on project commenced in 2008 and is anticipated to complete in 2016. The project will have an installed capacity of 963 MW. First EIA was conducted in 1996, however, in the aftermath of 2005 earthquake and subsequent changes in demography, geology, ecological niches and social structure in project area an updated EIA was carried out in 2010. All the important social and environmental footprints of project were considered in this study. An environmental management plan (EMP) was also part of the report.
To implement EMP in befitting manner WAPDA Environment Cell is providing advisory services to project oriented Environmental Unit and environmental monitoring committee (EMC). The guidance of WEC for implementation of EMP is going many a mile in enhancing the resilience capacity of project towards environmental and social vulnerabilities.

This initiative of WEC is helping in rehabilitation of sensitive destruction prone ecosystem in and around the vicinity of project’s construction sites. Scores of health, safety, security, environment and social oriented parameters are being dealt in such a way that their implications many be reduced to bare minimum ideally below admissible national quality standards.
